Job description

About Blumen

Blumen is building the regulatory intelligence layer for American infrastructure. Our platform combines regulatory information with more than 2,500 geospatial datasets to help energy companies and environmental consultants understand the permits, constraints, and risks facing a project in hours instead of weeks.
We are a small, fast-moving team tackling a huge market at the moment AI is beginning to reshape professional services. Someone joining now will help define both Blumen and the future of environmental work in infrastructure development.

What we're looking for

We are looking for a product engineer to build AI and geospatial systems for energy and infrastructure risk analysis. You will have substantial product ownership, working directly with the team and customers to decide what to build and improve it after it ships.

You understand the problem before choosing tools or proposing solutions. No permitting experience required, but you must enjoy diving deep into complex problems and learning new domains.

You care about the details that make a product useful to customers, even when the work is tedious. You take responsibility for mistakes, accept feedback, and change your approach when the evidence calls for it. You explain decisions plainly, share context with teammates, and flag problems early so others can help.

What you will do

  • Own regulatory and permitting problems alongside our product and regulatory teams, questioning requirements and investigating unresolved questions.

  • Build and orchestrate long-running AI agents that combine regulations, geospatial data, and project details into well-supported risk analyses.

  • Benchmark AI agents and workflows against human QA'ed reports, turn root causes into engineering tickets, and verify improvements.

  • Build internal tools that help our team research, manage, and deliver work more efficiently.

  • Build customer-facing interfaces for project onboarding, interactive maps, and risk analyses.

  • Work across frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure. Use what you build and fix problems based on real usage.

Our Stack

  • React / NextJS

  • Python / FastAPI / Temporal

  • PostgresDB / PostGIS

  • Kubernetes / Docker

  • LLMs from several providers

  • Maplibre

  • QGIS

Qualifications

  • Several years of experience building and shipping software products end-to-end

  • Strong CS fundamentals and experience across frontend and backend development

  • Experience with GIS systems and geospatial ETLs is a major plus

  • Experience with long-running AI workflows and job orchestration is a major plus

What we offer

  • This role is based in our San Francisco office on a hybrid schedule, 3 days a week in person with the rest flexible. We do collaboration and onboarding in person.

  • 75% of employee medical premiums covered

  • Lunch and dinner stipend

  • Office gear stipend

  • Unlimited PTO with manager approval

Our values

  1. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes. We care deeply about serving our customers above all else.

  2. No job is too small. Details matter, even if nobody will ever see them.

  3. Every problem is an opportunity. Any solution that is clever, difficult to reproduce, or takes serious guts is an opportunity to widen our moat.

  4. To go far, go together. We trust, respect, win, and lose together, as a team.

  5. Own the problem. Not your solution. Best idea wins.

  6. It doesn’t get easier. We just get faster. There is no finish line. Every day is a step toward compounding success. This is a marathon toward excellence.
