Job description

Director of Content

Climate Action Now (CAN) is seeking a versatile climate champion to create impactful actions that let concerned citizens ("CANdoers") fight climate change with just a few touches on their phones.

What we offer

  • An opportunity to make a big difference on climate change
  • $55,000 - $70,000 starting annual salary
  • 401(k) contributions
  • 4 weeks of vacation/sick leave
  • 100% remote work. A high-speed Internet connection is essential for this job!
  • Flexible hours, but you should work mostly during our office hours (9-6 PT)

What we need

  • 4-year college degree with 5 years work experience after college, or Master's Degree with 3 years work experience pre/post degree. Preference will be given to candidates with degrees in Journalism, Communications, Sustainability/Environment, and/or Advocacy.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills
  • Strong technical and analytical skills (programming experience a plus)
  • Passionate commitment to solving the climate crisis
  • A positive, sociable personality, as this role involves working with volunteers and the public
  • U.S. residents only

Who we are

Climate Action Now is the publisher of the leading app -- Climate Action Now -- for citizen advocacy on climate. CANdoers take exponentially more action than citizens using conventional forms of advocacy like web forms. In just three years, CANdoers have:

  • Taken over 2,620,000 actions
  • Sent over 2,234,000 messages to political, regulatory, and business leaders
  • Planted over 264,000 trees
  • Helped pass critical climate legislation, regulations, and policy. (Video testimonials.)

While other climate apps focus on individual behaviors, we are laser-focused on bringing about systemic change. We have demonstrated again and again that CANdoers help pass critical legislation and regulations -- actions necessary to create the speed and scale needed to solve the climate crisis.

We're making a difference -- and you can be a BIG part of that!

What you'll do

As our Director of Content, your primary focus will be to ensure that CANdoers receive a steady stream of timely, relevant, well-researched, and well-written messages to send to political, regulatory, business, and other leaders advocating action on climate. Every week, you'll:

  • Train, coach, and inspire our wonderful team of volunteer Action Creators.
  • Review and edit their actions to ensure they follow our editorial guidelines and are configured properly for the CAN app.
  • Research and write the first draft of our weekly newsletter to inspire readers to action, and create the key actions for CANdoers to take in the upcoming week.
  • Strategize with senior staff ways to increase our impact and expand our reach.
  • Assist leaders of other climate organizations who use our platform to advance shared goals.

Who You Are and Why You'll Be Successful

  • You're an excellent writer, an active listener, and have a sociable personality.
  • You like translating complex ideas into concise, easy-to-take actions for CANdoers.
  • You love thinking deeply about big problems, writing concise, persuasive prose, and working with other people to make the world a better place.
  • You've likely had several years of experience in a communications role for a nonprofit, advocacy organization, media organization, public relations firm, or political campaign.
  • You have a passion for all forms of communication, such as SEO, social media, audio, and video, and likely have experience with the associated tools and techniques.
  • You can work alone on a computer for long periods. This isn't a great job for highly extroverted people. You will have lots of interaction with others, but most of the time you'll be reading, thinking, and writing.
  • You are comfortable with powerful online tools. No coding is required. If you have ever generated database reports or created a moderately complicated Excel spreadsheet model, you'll have no problem with our systems.

How to apply

Please send an email to [email protected] with a resume and cover letter explaining why this is a good fit for you. We look forward to hearing from you!
